South Korea's Agency for Defense Development (ADD) is to conduct a three-year study on its next-generation Korean Fighter X (KFX) programme to test the future viability of the indigenous development project, a senior official from the ADD told Jane's on 9 September. The results of the study will determine whether to build a prototype - designed to demonstrate and test advanced fighter technologies - or move ahead with a plan to develop the KFX aircraft for serial production, said Colonel Lee Dae-yeol, team leader of the ADD's aircraft systems development project. If production is recommended, the aircraft is expected to enter service around 2020.
