Malaysia has put the purchase of up to 12 Eurocopter EC 725 helicopters on hold as a result of the worsening economic climate. Speaking at an armed forces Diwali celebration on 28 October, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that the government had decided to delay the EC 725 procurement until the global economic situation stabilised. He added that the decision was made at a meeting of the National Economic Council, which he chaired on 13 October. However, Najib Tun Razak, deputy prime minister and finance minister, said on 29 October that the Home Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) would be discussing whether to choose a long-term payment plan or a delayed purchase for the helicopters in line with the government's goal of ensuring funds are available to counterbalance the effects of the global economic crisis.
