An emergency meeting of Great Lakes region heads of state opened on 7 November in a bid to prevent further bloodshed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a week-old ceasefire has crumbled. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon attended the summit in Nairobi along with DRC President Joseph Kabila and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who has consistently denied accusations of Rwandan support for the rebellion by renegade General Laurent Nkunda in the border region between the two countries.
