BAE Systems Australia has expressed concern that any delay in publishing the country's defence White Paper will have an impact on the approval and the awarding of defence contracts. Speaking to Jane's on 18 November, a spokesman for BAE Systems Australia said a delay beyond the first quarter of 2009 - when the White Paper is scheduled to be published - will make it "difficult to make decisions". The spokesman said: "[We] are concerned that a delay in publishing the defence White Paper could impact on the timing, the approval and the awarding of contracts to defence industries in Australia." He added that the government process of writing the White Paper - which commenced early in 2008 - had already had an impact on industry's ability to maintain workforces. As an example, he pointed to BAE Systems Australia's decision in September 2008 to reduce its workforce by 10 per cent in its shipyard facilities in Williamstown, Victoria.
