The present turmoil in Myanmar may or may not lead to the fall of the country's ruling junta, but the uprising has put China and, to a lesser extent, India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in a diplomatic dilemma. China is Myanmar's largest trading partner and main source of military hardware and it is coming under pressure from the West to use its leverage to put an end to the country's crisis. India, which in recent years has established trade and military ties with Myanmar, is coming under similar pressure, but its influence over the country's ruling generals is considerably less, as is that of ASEAN.
