The US military is considering the deployment of a non-lethal directed-energy system that could be used for crowd control or perimeter security.rnRepresentatives of the US Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate told reporters on 25 Octoberthat military commanders in Iraq were pushing for delivery of the Active Denial System: a capability built by Raytheon for the US Air Force (USAF) under a Pentagon Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) programme.rnUS Marine Corps (USMC) Colonel Kirk Hymes, director of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, said his office was "actively pursuing" a request from the USMC to field the system in Iraq. "We anticipate [that] within the first part of 2008; if the decision is made to deploy the system, it will be ready," he said. Col Hymes said the Fiscal Year 2008 supplemental war budget might fund the acquisition.
