A NATO spokesperson has told Jane's that the Military Committee has advised the North Atlantic Council that leasing commercial helicopters to supplement the alliance's battlefield-lift capability in Afghanistan is "the way we need to go".rnAlthough currently more of an idea than a concrete proposal, the plan is for NATO to lease approximately 20 civilian helicopters to ferry stores and ammunition around the south of the country primarily to free up MATO helicopters for troop-transport and assault operations.rnIt is intended that the leased aircraft will operate 'behind-the-lines', although the nature of the conflict in Afghanistan means that it is often impossible to distinguish exactly where 'the lines' are.
