The Dutch government has announced measures to tackle chronic personnel shortages in the armed forces. The step came after the second chamber of parliament in The Hague voiced its concern about the shortages on 5 November. Deputy Minister of Defence Cees van der Knaap told parliamentarians he would present a personnel action plan, without specifying its contents. However, Van der Knaap did tell parliament that one of the main causes of the shortages is the competitive labour market in the civilian sector, which offers attractive alternatives for highly qualified defence personnel.
