The US Congress has given the Department of Defense (DoD) less funding than it asked for and is calling for a variety of new cost reporting measures to make sure its funds are spent wisely. The House and Senate Appropriations Committees worked out a bill setting aside USD453.3 billion for defence spending in Fiscal Year 2006, including USD50 billion for ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The appropriation is USD4.4 billion under the administration's request. The House passed the appropriations bill on 19 December but it was awaiting passage by the Senate as JDW went to press.
