Australia is shifting away from a defence and strategic security outlook based on an outdated and isolationist ideal that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) must be trained, structured and equipped to defend the so-called 'sea-air gap' to the north and fend off attacks on the mainland. Over the past two years under John Howard's coalition government, the ADF has entered what could be described as the 'boost phase' in its transition towards expeditionary operations.
