The mission of US Strategic Command (STRAT-COM) made a gigantic leap in January 2005. Still charged solely with readying strategic nuclear forces nearly 15 years after the collapse of the Cold War, the Omaha, Nebraska-based headquarters was remodelled as the focal point of a new age of warfare. Fifteen months later, the command is still working to stand up regular operations in each of its newly assigned mission areas, which include global strike; missile defence integration; space operations; integration command, control (C2), communications and intelligence systems; offensive information operations; and leading the fight against weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
