摘要

Efforts by the US Air Force (USAF) to re-constitute its over-stretched Boeing E-3 Sentry airborne early warning and control fleet are nearing completion, according to Colonel Joseph Mudd, commander of the service's frontline airborne warning and control system (AWACS) unit. As the USAF's only AWACS unit, the 552nd Air Control Wing played a vital role in both the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns between September 2001 and October 2003. However, the experience left the wing's personnel overextended and desperately in need of rest and retraining. Senior USAF officers were also worried that the wing's training organisation had effectively been put on hold during the run-up to the Iraq campaign. The sudden surge in demand for AWACS units between 2001 and 2003 saw almost all the USAF's 33-strong E-3 fleet committed to operations around the world. This came on top of more than a decade of continuous no-fly zone patrols in the Middle East and the Balkans.
