Flush with funds from its copper trade, Chile is considering a number of new acquisitions across its armed services - from naval vessels to aircraft and armoured vehicles. The purchases are enabled by higher-than-expected mineral revenues that fund the acquisition of new military hardware under the country's Copper Law. Those funds, guaranteed to be 10 per cent of the state-owned copper mining company revenues, are set to reach more than $700 million by the end of 2005 due to an increase in the price of the metal.
