The US Army has tem- porarily frozen a major intelligence modernisa-tion project, in essence delaying a decision on what to do with the troubled Aerial Common Sensor (ACS) programme. Contractor Lockheed Martin has been struggling how to fit all the mission systems needed - the sensors and intelligence-gathering gear that provides its performance -into the aircraft it chose for the job. The aircraft, an Embraer ERJ-145, cannot accommodate the size, weight and power of all the systems the programme requires, army officials said. When weight estimates for the project were being calculated, insufficient consideration was given to the cabling and other support infrastructure that unites the systems.
