The Indian Navy is steadily emerging as the instrument of India's overseas military diplomacy and long-term guarantor of its energy security needs. Senior naval officers assent that the navy's 'lost decade' between 1985 and 1995, when no new vessels were on order, has been replaced by a new-found confidence and operational capability. By 2015-20, the Chief of the Navy, Admiral Arun Prakash, envisages a force with longer 'sea legs', operating in an expanding area of responsibility and ably sustaining its reach not only in the immediate Indian Ocean Region (IOR), but beyond to West, South-East and evenFar-EastAsia.
