Lockheed Martin Advanced Development Programs (ADP), better known as the Skunk Works, is undergoing a subtle but far-reaching transformation. It is shedding its platform-centric past - a heritage responsible for some of the most innovative, top-secret aircraft of the Cold War - and embracing the kind of transformational, network-centric technologies sought by the Pentagon for its future warfare needs. Jane's Defence Weekly recently gained exclusive access to ADP's new Integrated Warfare Development Center (IWDC) at the corporation's Fort Worth focus of operations in Texas. Located in the secure building that once housed the heavily classified A-12 strike aircraft programme for the US Navy (USN), the IWDC is designed to showcase the Skunk Works' developing capabilities in the network-centric warfare field. Lockheed Martin has invested significant sums of its own money in the IWDC to show that it is as serious about the development of transformational technologies as the US Department of Defense (DoD) is about shifting from traditional strategies to new warfighting concepts such as effects-based operations - a methodology that embraces highly selective targeting for a specific given effect over the scatter-gun, saturation-bombing approaches of the past.
