South Africa's defence budget is to remain virtually flat over the next three years despite the country's expanding role in regional peace support operations. The government has allocated R20.3 billion ($2.9 billion) budgeted for Fiscal Year 2004-05 (FY04-05) and R22.1 billion and R23.4 billion provisionally set aside for the next two financial years respectively. Defence will account for only 1.52% of gross domestic product, declining to 1.47% at the end of the three-year medium-term expenditure period.
