Senior Israel Navy (IN) officials are expressing confusion and concern over IN Commander Vice Adm Yedidya Ya'ari's order to halt two years of staff work on a programme to obtain two to three multimission corvettes and instead focus on a programme to acquire a 13,000-ton amphibious assault ship. Adm Ya'ari presented the IN's senior command with his new plan a few weeks ago to build a landing platform dock-type (LPD-type) vessel, capable of carrying main battle tanks, helicopters and hundreds of troops to a range of 2,000nm (3,200km). IN sources told JDW that Adm Ya'ari proposes that the IN should develop the capacity to deliver a large ground force with logistical support to distant targets, currently beyond the IN operational range.
