The Japanese Defence Agency (JDA) has requested a total of ¥4.933 trillion ($45 billion): an increase of 1.2% from Fiscal Year 2004 (FY04). The defence budget request for FY05 was announced on 31 August and, if approved, will mark the sharpest rise in military spending since a 1.98 % increase in 1997. The majority of the budget for FY05 focuses on ballistic missile defence (BMD) and counter-terrorist capabilities. The total budget for BMD programmes is ¥144.2 billion - up from ¥106.8 billion in FY04.
