UK Royal Air Force (RAF) air superiority squadrons have demonstrated the enhanced capability of the latest upgrade package to their Panavia Tornado F3 fighter aircraft in a major exercise in Canada. Exercise 'Maple Flag' earlier this year was the culmination of an eight-year effort to field the Raytheon AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) on the Tornado F3, which is the RAF's primary air supremacy aircraft. At the heart of the BAE Systems-led AMRAAM Optimisation Programme (AOP) is the installation of a datalink to allow mid-course guidance information to be downloaded into the missiles, meaning the RAF can use the beyond-visual-range (BVR) weapon to its full potential for the first time.
