Finmeccanica, Italy's leading national defence and aerospace company, has abandoned a strategy of taking part in European-wide consolidation of the defence industry and plans instead to pursue sector alliances, company officials said at the Paris air show last week. "Strategic alliances rather than mergers between equals clearly represent the way forward and to be successful we must learn to run our alliances in a certain and, I believe, clever way," said Pier-Francesco Guarguaglini, the company's president and chief executive.
