The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is facing critical personnel shortages in key areas, according to documents released under New Zealand's Official Information Act. All three services are similarly affected, but the most apparent problem is the lack of personnel with six to eight years' service. This has left the army with only 186 substantive captains available for 286 established positions and a number of the captains are already covering deficiencies in the number of serving majors.
