Information operations (IO) have been of growing importance to the US armed forces over the past few years and played a major role during Operation 'Iraqi Freedom', senior military officials and IO experts say. IO - the ability to affect the perceptions of an enemy to provide military advantage - was significant in Iraq because Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath regime was susceptible to such tactics, US military planners said.
