The US rolled out a number of new information warfare tools during Operation 'Iraqi Freedom' (OIF) that were capable of performing a variety of missions and could be the precursor to future developments. The tools, many of which were modifications to existing infrastructure that allowed them to perform entirely new missions, point to a growing trend in the field of information operations (IO). The EC-130H Compass Call communications jammer, for example, for the first time not only blocked enemy communications but was also able to take over Iraqi tactical radio networks to broadcast US psychological operations (psy-ops) messages.
