Nowhere is the sweeping euphoria over the 5 December Sri Lankan parliamentary election victory by the right-wing United National Front (UNF) better reflected than in the 18-year war between the government and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE). On 24 December, the LTTE declared a 'cessation of hostilities'. The government reciprocated and Chief of Defence Staff Gen Rohan de S Daluwatte ordered the armed forces and police not to launch any "offensive operations".
