In an effort to give the Afghan Ministry of Defence (MoD) a broadly national complexion and bolster his own position at the Loya Jirga (or Grand National Assembly) that opened in Kabul on 11 June, Defence Minister Marshal Mohammad Fahim Khan has announced the formation of a new Military Commission within the MoD. The new body, unveiled by Marshal Fahim at an 8 June press conference, and which he will head, includes virtually all Afghanistan's regional military strongmen ― several of them bitter rivals. In an olive branch to the royalist camp, the Commission also includes Sardar Abdul Wali, the ageing but influential son-in-law of former monarch Zahir Shah.
