The US Department of Defense (DoD) closed its invitation for international participation on 15 July during the formative phase of its F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme, following its receipt of financial backing worth more than $4.5 billion from up to 10 partner countries. Jane's Defence Weekly reviews the factors that encouraged so many countries to invest in the USA's largest-ever defence procurement and assesses whether the aircraft's future sales prospects are likely to be equally successful. Unparalleled for the transparency of its 'fly-off between Boeing's failed X-32 and Lockheed Martin's triumphant X-35 demonstrators that concluded last year, the potentially $200 billion JSF project has also been remarkable for the way it has been promoted internationally. Lockheed Martin's aspirations to manufacture up to 6,000 of the aircraft will largely be determined by the export market response to this policy.
