The US Army is taking steps to embrace the kinds of precision weaponry that have won favour with US defence leaders and will introduce a range of new munitions for aviation and fire-support on the ground. The army plans to dedicate much of its annual $4 billion-to-$5 billion munitions budget on precision and smart systems, and accelerate fielding of some systems by as much as three years. Systems to benefit from this new commitment are the XM935 120mm Precision-Guided Mortar Munition (PGMM), the Common Modular Missile and enhancements to the 70mm (2.75in) Hydra 70 rocket under the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) advanced technology demonstration.
