There is little doubt that the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) faces an operational environment that is higher risk and overall more threatening than before in peacetime. Regional navies look set to continue to evolve from a focus on coastal operations to more well-rounded force structures, including force projection and true 'blue water' capabilities.
