China's defence industry has revealed a prototype 8 × 8 tank destroyer armed with a turret-mounted 120mm smoothbore gun. The 8 × 8 chassis of this as-yet undesignated vehicle could be a further development of the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) WZ 551 6 × 6 armoured personnel carrier (APC), which first appeared in public in 1986. This is now in service in significant numbers and is being adapted for an increasing number of roles.
