In what several military and defence officials cite as evidence that the uniformed services in the US Department of Defence (DoD) still do not adequately co-operate, the US Air Force (USAF) and US Navy (USN) are each independently developing new surveillance and reconnaissance systems' architectures, despite large degrees of similarity. Both systems will replace existing airborne intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance platforms with what could be a mixture of manned aircraft, unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) such as the Northrop Grumman Global Hawk, and links to satellite systems. The USAF calls its system the Multi-sensor Command and Control Constellation (MC~2C) and the USN has named its system the Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA).
