Director General Nils Holme of Norway's Defence Research Establishment (DRE) has resigned after regional interests in Parliament virtually dismantled Chief of Defence (CHOD) Gen Sigurd Frisvold's defence modernisation plan (Jane's Defence Weekly 28 June 2000). Holme said Norway's armed forces are in deep crisis. He is not willing to continue in his position as a chief adviser as long as the DRE analyses are not heeded. The DRE played a key role in the analyses, which formed the basis for CHOD's plan. There have also been some sharp exchanges of opinion between Gen Frisvold and politicians since the Parliamentary decisions in mid-June.
