The US government imposed sanctions against organisations in China and Pakistan earlier this month following its determination that Beijing had sent Islamabad assistance for its ballistic missile programmes that is prohibited under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). US officials told Jane's Defence Weekly that while the sanctions were implemented for the most recent transaction, the overall pattern of Chinese assistance to Pakistan's missile programmes has not changed substantially over the years. The officials noted that what has changed is the apparent willingness of the Bush administration to act quickly when such instances do arise.
