Flexibility is essential for the Tonga Defence Services (TDS). "We must react to the requirements of our society," says Prince Ulukalala. The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago of 170 islands, 36 of them inhabited, lying east of Fiji. A British protectorate over the period 1900-1970, it has a land area of 748 km~2 and a population of nearly 110,000. The country's maritime territory covers some 700,000 km~2.
