The Malaysian Army has submitted a request for equipment procurements worth M$6.79 billion ($1.79 billion) under the 8th Malaysia Plan, covering the period 2001-2005, according to draft documents obtained by Jane's Defence Weekly. The proposed purchases have yet to receive government approval and funding as the five-year development plan is awaiting finalisation, which is due before year-end. They nevertheless indicate capabilities that the army is seeking to boost or introduce as military modernisation resumes following the economic downturn that hit the region in mid-1997.
