The US Department of Defense (DoD) has embarked on a two-year research effort to identify breakthrough technologies for supersonic flight. The programme aims to determine the feasibility of a much quieter and more cost-effective high-speed platform to fulfil long-range strike, reconnaissance or transport missions. The move follows an hiatus of almost three decades in investment in revolutionary supersonic aircraft technologies.
