The Libyan National Army (LNA) appears to have carried out a remarkable logistical feat by moving forces over 1,000 km to ostensibly take control of the southwest of Libya. Led by the former general Khalifa Haftar, now referred to as a field marshal, the LNA is the powerful Libyan faction that controls most of eastern Libya and opposes the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord. The LNA announced on 15 January that it had launched an operation in the south of the country to secure oilfields and fight terrorists. It appears to have used the city of Sabha as its start point, with aircraft deployed at Tamanhint airport to the north providing support.
