Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has inaugurated a defence-industrial corridor in the southern state of Tamil Nadu: one of two such zones planned by the government to support the development of regional defence companies. Announcing the launch of the Tamil Nadu corridor on 20 January, Sitharaman said foreign and local defence companies had pledged to invest more than INR31 billion (USD434 million) in the industry zone over the next few years. Companies that have expressed interest in investing in the corri-dor, she said, include Lockheed Martin and state-owned local enterprises Ordnance Factories Board, Bharat Electronics, Bharat Earth Movers, and Mazagon Dock.
