In this, the 70th anniversary year of NATO's found-ing, the alliance could really have had a better last 12 months. Already under pressure from US President Donald Trump, somewhat justifiably, for not contributing enough to their own defence, the NATO members beyond the United States were caught by surprise when Trump pulled US forces out of northeastern Syria in October. This shattered any sense of alliance unity to such an extent that in November French President Emmanuel Macron declared in an interview with The Economist, "What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO."
