On 28 January FLIR Systems expanded its unmanned systems range by acquiring Aeryon Labs for USD200 million. Roger Wells, vice president and general manager of unmanned systems and integrated solutions at the company, said the purchase was intended to generate "more platform capability, more payloads, and longer duration in an expanding mission set that could be pushed out further to the point of battle". The firm's focus on unmanned airborne systems, moving beyond its traditional strength in sensors, goes back to the acquisition of Prox Dynamics, completed on 30 November 2016, which included the Norwegian manufacturer's Black Hornet nano unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV): a tiny helicopter and personal reconnaissance system (PRS) that enables personnel to maintain covert situational awareness (SA) and threat detection beyond their line of sight.
