Amid tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea the Philippines announced on 2 June that it has suspended the pending termination of its Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States. Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr posted on Twitter a diplomatic note sent to the US Embassy in Manila the previous day stating that "in light of political and other developments in the region" the termination of the VFA, which came into force in May 1999, has been "suspended".
