The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has commissioned its third and final Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD). Named HMAS Sydney (42), the vessel entered service on 19 May during the RAN's first at-sea commissioning ceremony since the Second World War. "The navy is now equipped with a new level of flexibility and lethality to protect maritime task groups operating in an increasingly complex region, while also allowing us to work even closer with our allies," said Australian Defence Minister Linda Reynold. Sydney is part of a three-ship programme to replace the RAN's fleet of Adelaide-class (US Oliver Hazard Perry design) guided-mis-sile frigates. First-of-class HMAS Hobart (39) was commissioned in September 2017, while the second ship, HMAS Brisbane (41), entered service in October 2018.
