The Australian government has announced a series of grants for local companies as part of a wider effort to "build resilience" in the national defence industry in the face of challenges related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Department of Defence (DoD) in Canberra said on 15 May that it had released AUD2.4 million (USD1.6 million) in funding under its Sovereign Industrial Capability Priority Grant scheme and AUD1 million under its Defence Global Competitiveness Grant policy. The 'sovereign capability' programme is intended to support the development of local technologies and competencies deemed critical for the Australian Defence Force (ADF), while the 'global competitiveness' programme is geared towards supporting domestic firms pursue export opportunities.
