The deployment of Russian combat aircraft to Libya has raised fears that Moscow is establishing a major military presence in a second Mediterranean country, but its position in North Africa currently looks tenuous. "If Russia seizes basing on Libya's coast, the next logical step is they deploy permanent long-range anti-access/area denial (A2AD) capabilities," US Air Force General Jeff Harrigian, commander of US Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa, said in a US Africa Command (AFRICOM) statement released on 26 May. "If that day comes, it will create very real security concerns on Europe's southern flank." The statement said the US military had tracked Russian fourth-generation fighters that were flown to the Russian airbase in Syria, where they were repainted before flying to Libya. It said they would likely be used to provide close air support for the Wagner Group: a Russian military company that is supporting Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA) in its fight against the Government of National Accord (GNA).
