India and China have set their militaries on high alert after the most serious border clash between them since 1975 resulted in 20 Indian Army (IA) soldiers being killed and an undisclosed number of People's Liberation Army (PLA) casualties. The incident, which took place in the 4,419 m-high Galwan Valley in the Himalayas on the night of 15-16 June, has further heightened military tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LoAC), with each side blaming the other for the deadly clash. In a statement issued on 16 June the IA first declared that three of its soldiers, including a colonel commanding an infantry battalion, had been killed as a result of the fighting, but pointed out later that day that the number of dead had risen to 20.
