Brazil is seeking to boost its defence spending to 2% of the country's GDP for 2021, the country's defence minister, Fernando Azevedo e Silva, recently revealed. The target was confirmed by a spokesperson at the Ministry of Defence to Janes on 10 July. The target is part of the country's review of the National Defence Strategy paper, which is soon to be handed over to the country's National Congress fordiscussion and approval. Of the BRL80.22 billion (USD15.05 billion) allocated for defence this year, which is about 1.3% of current GDP, a total of BRL33.67 billion has been spent so far, according to updated figures by the Office of the Comptroller General.
