The French-led Operation 'Barkhane' has built a new base for the Armed Forces of Mali (FAMa) in Labbezanga: a town on the River Niger close to where it crosses into Niger."This camp constitutes a shield behind which the Malian soldiers will have no spirit of retreat in the fight," the FAMa said in a statement announcing the inauguration of the base on 24 July.The FAMa announced in November 2019 that it was withdrawing from isolated positions on its borders with Burkina Faso and Niger due to deteriorating security, including Labbezanga, with the troops there moving to Ansongo, about 80 km to the north. It announced on 17 May that its forces had returned to Labbezanga to re-establish a security post.
