As defence industries around the world are adapting to the 'new normal' caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the objectives of Ecuador's state-run shipyard, Astilleros Navales Ecuatorianos (Astinave), remain firm. "Our goal is to be the major supplier of maritime projects in the industrial and defence and security sectors in Ecuador and become a competitive option in the international market," its general manager, Captain Camilo Delgado, told Janes. One of the shipyard's current projects is the construction of a multipurpose vessel, based on German company Fassmer's MPV70 MKII design, for the Ecuadorian Navy. The contract for the vessel, which will be 80 m long and capable of carrying a crew of 66, was signed in December 2019 and, according to Capt Delgado, "Construction will commence in the first trimester of 2021 and will be complete within 30 months, by 2023." Due to its complexity this project will be a "milestone for Ecuador's naval engineering capabilities", he emphasised, noting that two more vessels of the same class will be built following delivery of the first ship.
