A ground-breaking ceremony for a new Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airbase in the northeast state of Gombe was held on 7 September. Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, the governor of Gombe, inaugurated the project at a 230-hectare site at Gombe Lawanti International Airport that he said he had handed over to the NAF in August. He commended the NAF for acting so quickly to establish the base. The NAF released a statement saying the base would be used by the new 203 Combat Reconnaissance Group (203 CRG), which will operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other unspecified air assets. "The commander [of 203 CRG], as well as the first set of personnel to man the unit, are already posted to Gombe and, in the days and weeks ahead, will work with the state government to ensure that the group is ready to commence active operations in the shortest possible time," the NAF quoted its commander, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, as saying during the ceremony.
