Elbit Systems is to upgrade Romania's Avioane IAR-99 Soim (Hawk) jet trainers, with a USD27 million award announced on 14 December 2020. The Israeli company said that it has been subcontracted by Romanian-based Avioane Craiova for the first phase of the upgrade programme forthe Romanian Air Force's (RoAF's) fleet of domestically built 1980s-era Soim aircraft. "Under the contract Elbit Systems will equip the IAR-99 standard aircraft with advanced avionics systems and a live training Embedded Virtual Avionics system, as well as close air support and air-to-air capabilities. This upgrade will facilitate an effective transition of RoAF pilots to the operation of advanced fighter aircraft, such as the [Lockheed Martin] F-16," Eibit said. The contract will be performed over a four-year period and includes integrated logistic support.
